PIE # 78 - "Twoje geny to nie wyrocznia"

(11.05.2013) Joanna Werner-Frączek

Identical twins are born with the same genes but can become surprisingly different as they grow older; one can be healthy while the other develops cancer.

A blooming field called epigenetics is revealing how factors like nutrition and stress can shape the behavior of our individual genes. Is eating salad, or jogging, going to protect my genes from unwanted changes? Am I really me since for every cell in my body there are on average 10 bacterial cells? Is it in my best interest to protect them by eating healthy yogurt? Will any of these actions enhance my longevity? A new medical science is reshaping the way we think about nature and nurture.
